Chairman’s Report(2008 -2010)
Between December 2008 and November 2010, the Journalism Education Foundation was on track in implementing its programmes under the guidance of our honorary patrons. With broad support from industry, government and the community, the Foundation’s work has gained widespread recognition.
During the period, the Foundation’s most important activity was organizing a study tour to Europe in May 2010. A delegation of 20 senior journalists toured four cities in three countries, where they visited nine media operations, four international organizations, the British and German parliaments, two financial regulatory bodies, four Chinese diplomatic missions and three overseas offices of the Hong Kong government. The participants considered the tour a great success and felt that they could apply much of what they learned on the trip to their daily work.
On nurturing future journalists, the Foundation has made the mainland internship programme a regular activity. Under the programme, journalism students are assigned to Hong Kong media’s Beijing reporting teams in March to help cover the annual plenary meetings of the National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. In 2009, the students also helped cover the 60th anniversary of the founding of the nation.
Organizing a national affairs workshop before the yearend has also become an annual routine for the Foundation. The workshop provides an opportunity for senior journalists to directly interact with central government officials and experts involved in policy formulation. Besides, the Foundation has also hosted luncheons and dinner gatherings for journalists to exchange views with central and Hong Kong government officials on economic, political, diplomatic and livelihood issues. To encourage continuous learning, the Foundation runs a scholarship programme, which has so far helped four journalists to pursue graduate studies.
The publication of One Person, One Story in mid-2010 was a breakthrough in achieving the Foundation’s objective of facilitating the sharing of journalistic expertise. The collection of 141 journalists’ writings on their memorable experiences offers invaluable insights into the operation of the Hong Kong press and has won critical acclaim from both journalists and general readers.
On media education, every year the Foundation works with the Education Bureau to conduct workshops for secondary students before the summer vacation to introduce them to the operation of the media and the importance of press freedom. As the workshops are very popular, the Foundation will try to increase their capacity if conditions allow.
On behalf of the Executive Committee, I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has provided generous support to the Foundation over the past two years. May Chan, Director of News and Public Affairs of Hong Kong Commercial Radio, has been elected the next chairman and will assume the position on December 1, 2010. We look forward to continuous support and guidance from every sector of the community to help the Foundation perfect its operations.
